Should you tip your movers

Should You Tip Your Movers?

Tip your movers. When you hire professional movers to help you relocate, you can rest assured that you have set up your move to go as smoothly as possible.  Professional movers pack your belongings, transport all your things to the new home, and then unpack boxes for you once they arrive.  Yes, it can be expensive, but all that help is definitely worth it.  After all the work has been done, and you have paid your bill, some wonder if you should also tip the movers.  Take a look below to help you decide what is expected as far as tipping concerned, and also how much is appropriate.

Is Tipping Required?

While professional movers are not expecting to be tipped, tips are highly appreciated.  They have provided you with a service and may think you are unsatisfied with said services if they’re not tipped.  Moving is hard work, even if you are being paid to do it.  So, if you want everything to run smoothly during your move, it may be prudent to plan on tipping.

How Much Should You Tip?

Ultimately, you decide how much to tip, but you should consider certain factors before you decide on the amount.  If the move was local and the movers were hired just to load, transport, and then unload, then a good amount to tip would be $20 per mover.  If your move was cross country, which required more time and effort on the mover’s part, than you may want to tip $35-$50 per mover. A larger tip would be fair too, if you went with full-service movers and they also helped pack your belongings.  Of course, you should also figure on a tip amount based on your particular budget and your satisfaction with the job.

Other Factors to Consider to tip your movers

Sometimes a move gets a bit more complicated than usual and you should consider that when tipping.  For example, if your movers had to deal with going up and down flights of stairs.  Or, if parking for the moving truck was difficult, like in a downtown area where parking is metered.  Also consider the weather during the move.  Whether the weather was very hot or humid, or cold and icy, or the move took place during a rainstorm.  If your movers had to deal with inclement weather at all, it may be nice to give a bigger tip.

Alternative Ways to Show Appreciation in Addition to the tip

Tipping money is the best way to show your professional movers that you were satisfied with the job.  However, there are other ways you can show appreciation in addition to cash tips. You may want to have a cooler full of drinks and snacks to share with your movers.  They will work much better if they are full and hydrated.  If it is in your budget, you could provide a proper meal for them depending on the time of the move, that could be breakfast, lunch or dinner.  You can verbally thank them for a job well done.  And, you could write a positive review for the moving company.   Again, it should be known that none of these things are expected, they are just ways you can show your gratitude.
